Foods That Make Your Mood Better

Most of us believe that comfort foods are bad for us and that we need to avoid them. However, if your comfort food is candy or junk food this holds true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be altogether nourishing and it’s good for you to eat them. There are several foods that, when you consume them, may improve your mood. If you feel a little bit down and in need of an emotional pick me up, try several of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be truly wonderful at beating back depression. You must make sure, though, that what you make includes the egg yolk. The yolk is the most crucial part of the egg iwhen it comes to helping raise your mood. Eggs, the egg yolk especially, are rich in B vitamins. These B vitamins are terrific for helping to improve your mood. This is because these vitamins increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Eat an egg and jolly up!

Make a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and so on are all great for elevating your mood. This is because these foods are rich in magnesium, which helps to boost serotonin levels. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical that tells your brain how you feel at all times. The more of it in your brain, the happier you’ll feel. Not only that but nuts, specifically, are a fantastic source of protein.

Cold water fish are great for eating if you are wanting to combat depression. Cold water fish like tuna, trout and wild salmon are rich in DHA and omega-3 fats. These are two substances that boost the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can basically help you overcome depression.

It’s not hard to fight your bad mood when you eat grains. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are great at helping you feel better. These foods fill you up better and that can help improve your moods too. Feeling hungry can actually make you feel awful! The reason these grains can improve your mood is that they are not difficult for your body to digest. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps kick up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, raises your mood.

Green tea is actually great for your mood. You were just waiting to read that, weren’t you? Green tea is loaded with an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Research has discovered that this amino acid promotes the production of brain waves. This helps improve your mental energy while simultaneously relaxing the rest of your body. You already knew green tea could help you feel so much healthier. Now you know that applies to your mood also!

As you can see, you don’t have to turn to junk food or foods that are terrible for you so you can feel better! Try a couple of of these tips instead.
